Remembering Mom

Today is the 3rd anniversary of my mother's passing. There isn't a single day that goes by that I don't think about her. I miss her and love her as much today as I did 3 years ago. The hole in my heart that she left is just as empty as it was 3 years ago. But there is a fullness in my heart that helps ease the pain of her loss. That fullness is Tyler, and it is because of him that I have not lost my mind over losing my mom too soon. There isn't a single day that goes by that I don't thank God for this little boy. And for the time that I had with my mother. And I know that my mom would have LOVED this little boy. She would have spoiled him and he would have been the center of her world. I hate that she doesn't get to know him, and that he doesn't get to know her. But we'll just keep telling him stories about her, and he will know her as well as he can.

This past weekend we visited Nana Scoggin and played in her beautiful yard, and with her neighbors' miniature horses. On Saturday, we drive to Union Mills with Nana, Grandpa, Uncle Eddie, & Miss Emily. We let Tyler play in the cemetery and he was introduced to catepillars, which he LOVED! The weather was beautiful, and we had a nice, quick visit there. And so, I won't say any more. Just enjoy some pics from our weekend.

1st dental checkup!

Tyler had his first trip to the dentist this week! I was really nervous about the whole thing, but it wasn’t as bad as I expected! We talked about the visit all morning, and on the way to the appointment. When he got there, he had a blast playing in the waiting room. They also have all glass walls so you can see other kids having their teeth cleaned and having the dentist examine them, which I thought was awesome. So Tyler watched lots of the kids sitting patiently and we talked about how they were going to look at his teeth & clean them. The hygienist came out, introduced himself to us, then told Tyler about all of the prizes he was going to get if he was good. Bribery can be very powerful - sometimes.

Tyler calmly followed him back to the exam chairs, and picked out a toothbrush. And that’s where the calmness ended. He wasn’t having anything to do with Andrew, the hygienist. Andrew showed him every piece of equipment, told him what it did, let him play with them, etc. Tyler only wanted to sit in my lap, and even then he wasn’t buying what Andrew was selling. Dr. Dawson finally came over and calmly talked to Tyler and we got him to settle down enough to have Andrew brush his teeth and Dr. Dawson could look in his mouth (while I sat in the exam chair with my arms and legs over Tyler’s arms and legs to lightly restrain him). He did just fine during that part, it was just getting him there that was the challenge!

Anyway, no cavities and a mouth full of beautiful teeth! His second set of molars are on their way in, but we already knew that from the way he jams his hands in his mouth all the time! Tyler walked out of there with a handful of Backyardigans stickers, a bouncy ball, a new toothbrush, and a goody bag with “Bob Pants” (aka Spongebob Squarepants) on it. We go back in October for his next visit.

Even though the visit wasn’t peaceful and perfect, we’re really glad we decided to take him now. He’s got the first visit behind him now, and we feel good knowing that we’re taking good care of his teeth and that they have come in well.

We're headed to NC tomorrow for the weekend. We'll be staying in Browns Summit with Nana Scoggin, and making a trip to Union Mills on Saturday with Grandpa, Uncle Eddie, & Miss Emily so that we can visit Mom & Papa Scoggin's graves. April 27th is the 3rd anniversary of Mom's passing, and we thought that now would be a good time to visit. Pics to come.

Easter 2009

Well, the Easter Bunny did indeed visit our house this year. But not before we dyed some Easter eggs as a family! Tyler had a great time with the dye job, but got a little impatient as he had to sit and wait for the color to darken on the eggs. Travis read Tyler several Easter books in the weeks leading up to the big day, with his favorite being a Winnie the Pooh Easter book (which Tyler even took to school to share with his friends!). Easter morning, Tyler came down the stairs to find that the Bunny had left lots of goody-filled Easter eggs all over the house. He had a great time finding the eggs (and cracking them open to eat jelly beans at 8:00 AM), then pronounced loudly "EASTER BUNNY!!!!" as he saw his loaded Easter basket.

Thanks to Woot.com, we are the proud owners of a Flip video camera. I had Flip envy when the Clarkes were here visiting for Tyler's birthday party, and when one was being sold on Woot for a discounted price, I jumped on it. Our digital camera has the capability to take videos too, but we've already found that the quality is 100 times better with the Flip. So, enjoy a few videos from the past week.

Just some new stuff

We've been pretty busy here lately - another Home Depot kids' workshop (he made a racetrack this time, well, I did), testing out a new jogging stroller (I'm determined to get in shape this spring), a little bit of grilling outside (Tyler loves to help cook!), getting 2 year pictures taken (I am so glad that we don't have to do THAT for another year - whew!), and just enjoying the gradual change to spring (though we wish it would come on a bit faster). We have lots coming up too. A quick visit from our dear friends the Bowlers this weekend while they are in town from Florida, a visit to Lynchburg to see Grandpa, Uncle Eddie, & Miss Emily next weekend, then Easter the weekend after. Busy times ahead! Before we know it, the pool will be open, Aunt Jenn & Uncle Brian's little boy will be born, and we'll be heading to the beach (with Grandpa & Eddie, AND meeting up with the Bowlers there!.

Snow in March!

We got our first real snow of the year. On March 2nd. Crazy! We got about 8 inches, and I can honestly say that I don't think that I've seen that much snow in Richmond since I moved here in 2002! The news claimed that we did have this much snow a few years ago, but I certainly don't remember it. It started on Sunday night (thankfully our friends the Clarkes, left earlier in the day!) and continued along with some very high winds throughout the night. Our power flickered a few times, which made me nervous, but we never lost power. Whew!

We woke up to a winter wonderland! We found out that Tyler's daycare was closed for the day, and were shocked to find out that Travis had the day off as well! I had just a little bit of hope that we might be able to spend the snowy day together only to have that hope shot down. Yep, I had to be at work that day. But since the roads were horrible, we decided that we had time to dress Tyler up in his snow gear and take him out for a little bit. (And I'll admit - I was glad that I needed to go in late because I was not about to be robbed of being able to make a memory of Tyler's first snow with him by having to rush to work.) Several months ago, I bought some snow boots and snow bibs for Tyler, knowing that if I DIDN'T buy them we'd get 2 feet of snow.

So I got him all dressed up and ready to go! He was really good about putting on lots of layers, and did well with his boots and mittens too. The mittens were a little harder to get on, but once they were on, he was OK with it - he just couldn't pick anything up! He stepped outside, and walked fairly well. He seemed to really like it, and then he was nailed in the face with a snowball by one of the neighbors. Once we corrected that situation, he was better and played for a little while. He stayed outside until the winds were so bad that he was getting snow blown in his face, and was almost getting knocked over. Then he was most definitely ready to come in. But I'm sure it'll be another 4+ years before we ever get this amount of snow again so I'm glad we got to enjoy it now. (And also glad that it was gone before long, as we had temps in the upper 70s just days later!!!!! BRING ON SPRING!!!!)

2nd Birthday Fun (and more)

We celebrated Tyler's 2nd birthday yesterday. Where has the time gone???? We had a great time with his party. We had it at the Children's Museum of Richmond and I was so happy that we did it there. It was so nice to have someone else set up and clean up. That was worth its weight in gold. All of the kids got to play in the museum before the party started, and after it was over. It was really crowded though, since it was a rainy day. Everyone in Richmond was looking for an indoor activity, I guess. But the kids still had a great time. I decided to get ambitious and made a dinosaur cake for a dinosaur themed party, and I thought it looked great! I got lots of compliments on both look and taste, so that's good.

Tyler got a ton of great stuff. Lots of spring and summer clothes (since I overestimated and bought a bunch of 3T stuff last year for this year that won't fit til next year - whoops), trucks, lots of Play-Doh, puzzles, a Little People barn (I love that thing! It reminds me of the old barn when I was a kid!), and lots of other great toys. We're very fortunate to have such great friends and family.

We had lots of out-of-town guests for the day too. Of course, Grandpa & Cindy were there, along with Uncle Eddie & Emily. Our friends, the Clarkes, came all the way from South Carolina, and friends the Springsteens came from Northern VA. It was so great to have so many people travel for the big day!

Before Tyler's birthday though, we did have to make a quick trip back to Lynchburg. Sadly, my Nana Woody passed away on February 23. So we went to Lynchburg for the services and were there from Tuesday through Thursday of the week. Aunt Kay & Uncle Mike from Singapore were in town, as well as my 3 cousins - Gray, David, & Anne. As sad as the situation was, it was great to spend time with all of them. Rest in peace, Nana. We will miss you.

First manly project!

We found out that our local Home Depot does a kids' workshop on the first Saturday of every month. It's completely free and kids get a new project to complete each time. So we took Tyler to his very first workshop this past weekend. He got his very own Home Depot apron, a pin for his apron (there's a different pin for each workshop that he will complete), and his to-be-completed project. This week's project was a wooden trinket box, built using only wood glue, so no nails or screws or anything else sharp. Tyler had a great job, and quickly took credit for all of his Daddy's hard work! And when he was finished, he even got a certificate for his hard work! We can't wait to take him to more workshops.

At the advice of our veterinarian, we bought a laser pointer to help encourage Beemer to be more active. It works, and he loves it. Tyler loves to watch him play with it too. He also loves to shine the laser for Beemer. But apparently, he also likes to try to squash the laser himself!!!! (sorry if it's a little dark....)

First haircut!!!

So after months of deliberation, Tyler had his first haircut this morning at the same salon I go to. We were hard pressed to want to get rid of those beautiful curls. It went pretty well, and we are sooo happy with the cut. We got there and Tyler wasn't sure about anything. We took him in and showed him what was going on, and he wasn't buying what we were selling. We introduced him to Katie, who would be cutting his hair. So finally we brought out the big guns - we set up the portable DVD player with a fresh Backyardigans DVD. Worked like a charm. He wasn't a fan of sitting alone, so he sat on my lap, and he really hated having the cape put on him. But again, once he saw his Backyardigan friends, he was cool.

Katie asked if we wanted a "little boy cut" or if we wanted to keep some of the curl. Well, damn, given the option, I want the curl!!! lol So she called it a "little boy shag". And the cutting began.
Tyler did awesome. As long as Tyrone & Austin were singing and dancing on the screen, he didn't care. She clipped away. And boy did she clip. We didn't realize just how long his hair had gotten until we watched her cut. lol I did keep some of the curls, and they are secure ina little envelope. But we love it. He looks so much older, at least to us. His hair is out of his face, which I know is a relief to him. And while he has the curls still, they aren't hearly as out of control as they were. LOVE IT!!!!
